Guion or Raji?

Another key decision for Ted Thompson lies with two defensive linemen in Letroy Guion and B.J. Raji. It’s hard to see a situation where both return, and equally tough to imagine neither returning.

So, who does he pick?

Letroy Guion: Walk

After Guion’s impressive 2014 season for the Packers, he seemed a lock to return in favor of Raji. That was until he got arrested for possession of marijuana and a firearm in Florida.

Guion finished the season with 32 tackles, 3.5 sacks and one forced fumble.

Despite a decent debut season in Green Bay, his off-the-field problems could well mean he is one season and done for the Packers.

Guion has only a $985,000 cap hit in 2014, and the chances are a new deal could lower that even more. With that in mind, Thompson may wish to re-sign him, but it seems unlikely after the arrest.

B.J. Raji: Re-sign

Guion’s loss would seemingly be B.J. Raji’s gain.

Raji is a veteran in Green Bay now, having played 76 regular season games. In this time, he’s made 129 tackles, 10.5 sacks and one fumble recovery.

And it would be wrong of me to neglect to mention his one interception, running it back for a touchdown in the 2010 NFC title game on the road at Chicago:

Raji signed a one-year, $4 million deal last year and looked rejuvenated in training camp before suffering a torn tricep. He missed the entire 2014 season, but could bounce back if he re-signs.

Thompson might look to sign him to a similar contract to the one he signed a year ago, but the price could well lower after a year on the sidelines.
