Bringing Williams back could be another win for the Packers

It would be a blow for the Packers to lose both the upside of House along with Williams’ veteran instincts. One of the pieces has gone; they must now make maintaining the other a priority.

At 32-years-old, Williams still has a lot to offer the Packers. His performances didn’t appear to have declined in 2014. He recorded 71 combined tackles (second-best of his career), as well as three interceptions and 13 pass defenses.

Williams’ durability is another positive. He has missed just one regular season game out of a possible 128 after eight years in the NFL. He’s played through injury and has provided the Packers with some continuity at corner.

When a player is over 30 years old in the NFL, worries can crop up over their durability. Williams may be the exception to the rule. Per Rob Demovsky of ESPN, Williams’ agent Rodney Williams believes so:

"“Everybody looks at that number 32, and it’s based strictly on whether you’re going to start breaking down and missing games. You’re talking about a guy who’s played in 140 out of 141 games, so if there’s any player on that team that’s going to show up every day, it’s Tramon Williams, so I think that’s going to be the exception to that age number that some people are putting out.”"

With pressing needs at inside linebacker and defensive tackle, the Packers don’t want the cornerback position to become as big of a priority.

By re-signing Williams, they will have a talented player who is familiar with Dom Capers’ system.

The Packers wouldn’t need to be so urgent in their attempts to find a replacement in the draft, and can focus on improving the run defense that ranked 23rd in the NFL last year.
