Green Bay Packers: Why would they even consider Greg Jennings?

The Packers are deep

The Packers are certainly deep at wide receiver, and this move would be more of a luxury than necessity. But you can never have too many talented players that can cause problems for an opponent.

At 31 years old and after a quieter two years than the seven he spent in Green Bay, it’s unlikely Jennings will be able to demand a contract anywhere near the average of $9 million he was making annually with the Vikings.

However, Jennings may have burned his bridges with the Packers after comments he made following his departure in 2013:

"“It’s like everything that you know in Green Bay is like the best, the best, the best, the best, the best,” Jennings said at the time. “And it’s like total brainwashing. And I think you don’t open your eyes to see what other teams have to offer unless you are in that position, and I was afforded this position.”"

He didn’t help his chances much in 2014, either. Rob Demovsky of ESPN wrote last September that Jennings didn’t regret his decision to leave. When asked by reporters in a conference call, Jennings responded:

"“Honestly, to be honest, no,” Jennings said. “It doesn’t because – and this is sincerity right here – it really has nothing to do with football.”"

Then again, it would hardly have sat well with the Vikings had he told the world that he regretted the move.

For Ted Thompson, it’s important that if he were to make a move for Jennings, it’s based on football and what he can provide in the future for the Packers. Not what he’s done.

There should be no emotion in the decision – purely football.

It seems improbable that Jennings will be catching passes from Rodgers for the Packers in 2015 …

But you just never know.
