Letroy Guion signs with the Green Bay Packers – is this the right choice?

Raji and Guion – veteran stop-gaps
Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said last week that he wasn’t fazed by defensive lineman Letroy Guion‘s brush with the law and that he wanted him back on the football team.
“I think to a man, everybody would like to see Letroy be a Green Bay Packer,” McCarthy told reporters at the NFL annual meetings in Phoenix this past week.
McCarthy’s desires came true today as the Packers re-signed Guion.
Today’s news came on the heels of this weekend’s news that Guion had set up a visit with the Seattle Seahawks just after his court case in Florida was concluded.
I, for one wondered just how serious the Packers were in re-signing him.

The Packers answered that question by not going the route they did with how they handled the Tramon Williams situation – Williams came out after visiting the New Orleans Saints and eventually signing with the Cleveland Browns as saying he thought the Packers didn’t have much interest in him.
Clearly, the Packers had an interest in Guion and may even be inching toward a deal with Raji.
Prior to the start of the free agency period, the Packers jumped on the need to re-sign the players they surely wanted: Randall Cobb, Bryan Bulaga, Scott Tolzien, and Don Barclay.
They are said to have had offers on the table for cornerbacks Davon House and Tramon Williams, but lost both to other teams.
That didn’t happen with Guion.
But is Guion really worth bringing back?
Well, I’m not the coach nor the general manager, so my vote doesn’t count, but if Guion is going to make the team, he’s going to have to play even better in 2015 than he did in 2014 … Guion was pedestrian at best during his time with Green Bay last season, and the numbers bear that out.
Let’s look a bit closer at why Guion will have to step up in 2015 …
