Round 6: Kennard Backman (TE)
With the last pick of their draft, Green Bay officially “filled” all of their needs: they took a tight end.
Backman looks to be a good choice too, one who could give nice depth to that spot.
He won’t need to contribute right away — having Richard Rodgers and veteran Andrew Quarless there already allows for bringing whoever is behind them along slowly if you prefer — so he can work his way into a spot onto the roster at whatever speed it takes.
Until then, put him onto special teams and get him to work.
Even if that’s all you end up getting from him, you’ve gotten a cheap option to potentially help improve a key weakness on the team.
If he does better, you’re golden. I wouldn’t be surprised if he does — teams usually doesn’t waste picks on guys if they don’t expect them to possibly grab a future spot on the roster.
Don’t be surprised to see Rodgers and Backman sitting as the top two tight ends here for the Packers in the near future. Probably not the most dynamic tight end combo in the league sure, but plenty young and plenty good enough to supplement whatever else Green Bay plans to do on offense over the next few seasons.
