Green Bay Packers: Five players to re-sign in 2016 offseason
John Kuhn
John Kuhn isn’t going to cost a lot of money – but for the small fee, the Packers get a ton of value. Kuhn’s knowledge of the Green Bay offense is outstanding. His communication, blocking ability and use on short-yardage plays makes him a valuable asset at fullback. Some of Eddie Lacy’s best work has come with Kuhn stood in front of him.
At the very least, Kuhn should be brought to training camp. From there, it’s down to second-year Aaron Ripkowski to take his job. Ripkowski was unable to do that as a rookie, barely taking a snap on offense and being limited almost exclusively to special teams.
The Packers would love to see Ripkowski take the job, but it will take a lot to dethrone Kuhn, a player with the trust of Aaron Rodgers and one who consistently produces. The fullback position is said to be a dying one, but Kuhn continues to be a rock for Green Bay on offense.
There’s every chance Kuhn hits free agency; he’s certainly not the Packers’ top priority. But when the time comes, Thompson should make the right move and bring him back to Green Bay on another short-term contract.
