Ty Montgomery

We’ll never know just how good Ty Montgomery’s rookie season could have been, but he was beginning to heat up before suffering a high ankle sprain which eventually ended his season.

Montgomery made an instant impact on special teams as the Packers’ return man. His first touch as an NFL player? A 41-yard kickoff return against the Bears. The rookie returned seven kicks for 218 yards. With a full season, there’s every chance he would have broken one to the house.

Making an impact as a returner was expected, but his performances on offense began to highlight just how big a player he can be for the Packers moving forward.

Montgomery’s numbers won’t blow anyone away. He caught 15 passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns. But after a slow start, his arrow was pointing firmly upwards after an impressive four-catch, 59-yard and one-touchdown display against St. Louis. Montgomery caught his first two targets for 11 yards against San Diego before getting hurt early in the game.

His season was cut short, but he still exceeded expectations. The concern was that the Packers had drafted a player to shore up special teams but wouldn’t feature him much on offense.

That was far from the case, and early indications suggest Montgomery will be a key part of the Packers’ offense for years to come.
