Green Bay Packers: Seven round mock draft pre-free agency

Round 4: RB Josh Ferguson, Illinois

Reports suggest the Packers are interested in signing free agent running back Matt Forte, who has tormented the Green Bay defense for a number of years with the Bears. Forte would act as James Starks’ replacement should he walk in free agency. But what if the Packers opt for a younger back in the draft?

Enter Josh Ferguson out of Illinois. Ferguson is a small back, but would be a perfect change-of-pace behind Eddie Lacy. He has blazing speed and quick feet making him particularly dangerous in the open field. He has good hands making him an immediate option in the passing game, either out of the backfield or in the slot. NFL.com draft analyst Lance Zierlein likes Ferguson’s skill set:

"“Small and lean waterbug of a running back. Ferguson’s ability to change direction instantaneously and create explosive yardage as a runner or pass catcher could make him a dangerous weapon in the hands of the right NFL team.”"

Ferguson would be the clear No. 2 behind Lacy but would complement his style well. With Lacy’s power and Ferguson’s speed, the Packers could have an even stronger 1-2 punch than the one they have with Starks as the second option.
