Green Bay Packers mock drafts? Lombardiave has got plenty of them
Round 2: DT Austin Johnson, Penn State
This is a great draft class for defensive linemen, and the Packers could take their pick of the bunch in round two. Austin Johnson out of Penn State has a lot to like, and he could make an impact on the Packers’ defensive line from day one.
Johnson has great size at 6-foot-4, 314 pounds but moves well for a big guy. He has the talent to become a disruptive nose tackle in Dom Capers’ 3-4, which would allow Letroy Guion to maintain his spot at left end. With Mike Daniels at right end and Johnson eating up blocks lined up over the center, the Packers’ defense could be much stronger up front in 2016.
Johnson can dominate with his bullrush and would also help shore up the Packers’ leaky run defense. Adding talent at inside linebacker is important, but it all starts up front in the trenches.
When watching Johnson’s tape there’s good reason to believe he could be selected on day one, but with so many talented defensive linemen in this year’s class, there’s every chance he falls to the Packers in round two. If he’s still available, Thompson shouldn’t hesitate to pick him up.
