Thomas Friesen: DT Sheldon Day, Notre Dame
Previous picks: ILB Reggie Ragland, CB Artie Burns
Sheldon Day has shown two keys that make him a good fit for the Packers defence. First, he is versatile, with experience all across the defensive line. While he is undersized at 6-foot-1, he can get to the passer or fill gaps anywhere up front. Without a true position, he can fit in as a solid backup.
Second, he is a lot faster than he looks. Day is often able to beat guards off the line with his speed, and fill gaps to stop the run. He has a remarkable ability to drop back in zone coverage and actually pick up receivers in the middle of the field.
I see Day’s speed making him a good fit in Dom Capers’ “NASCAR package,” where he sends a variety of blitzes using his fastest pass rushers. Day can add a unique dimension to the package, and would be a valuable piece to the defence down the road.
