The case for tight end in Round 1

Going into the offseason tight end seemed like one of the top needs on the roster. However, after failing to re-sign Jared Cook, the Packers signed veterans Martellus Bennett and Lance Kendricks in free agency, bolstering their position considerably.

Tight end may no longer be a priority going into the draft, but if a good enough prospect is still on the board at 29, the Packers could take him to be the future of the position. Bennett (age 30) and Kendricks (age 29) are both in the back half of their careers, and Richard Rodgers is entering the last season of his contract.

While it’s unlikely O.J. Howard will still be available at the end of the first round, there’s a chance Miami’s David Njoku will be, whose athletic upside could be tempting enough for Thompson to pull the trigger on in the first round.

Njoku may not offer much in his first year given the depth of the position, but he could develop into a big-time playmaker in their offense down the road.
