John Dorsey played linebacker for the Green Bay Packers, he worked in their scouting department and was their director of football operations before being tagged four years ago and hired as the Kansas City Chiefs’ general manager.

When Dorsey was abruptly released from his job in KC yesterday, the speculation swirling around his potential return to Green Bay has been white hot.

But let’s remember – it’s just speculation.

We don’t want to be accused of fake news here, so we won’t go down the road shouting that Dorsey is the heir apparent to incumbent Ted Thompson.

Sure, Thompson is working on the final year of his contract and it will expire after the NFL Draft in 2018 – that’s next year’s draft.

But that’s a long time from now and there is no reason to believe that Thompson won’t want to re-up for another few years.

Though there has been no news about contract extensions for Thompson, we all know how the Packers conduct business quietly and efficiently – behind closed doors.

Personally, I wouldn’t be surprised to see an announcement on a Friday night at 6 p.m. after all the day news crews have gone home – an announcement that would bring the news that Thompson had been re-signed.

That certainly isn’t something out of the realm of possibilities.

But in the meantime, one has to wonder if Thompson, at age 64, still has it in him to continue at the scouting pace that he has in the past and whether he still has the passion.

To answer that question, all one needs to do is take a look at the last draft.

Thompson’s skill in addressing the defense was not only somewhat surprising, but also indicative of a guy whose head is still in the game.

When Thompson went out in free agency and signed not one, but two topnotch tight ends, we were all blown away,

Was this the same Ted Thompson who had been deadly silent for so long and so often in free agency?

That doesn’t sound like the actions of a guy who still isn’t in the game.

I wouldn’t rule out a Thompson return – with the announcement made even before the conclusion of this upcoming season.

Is John Dorsey a viable candidate to take over the position when Ted Thompson does retire?

Absolutely.

He has the local ties; he has the long-term relationship with the franchise. He could be a very good addition to the Packers administrative team.

But then again, we have to consider the others who also have eyes on Thompson’s throne: Eliot Wolf, Brian Gutekunst, and Russ Ball. Of course, we also can’t forget about John Schneider, the GM of the Seattle Seahawks.

Will it happen this year?

That remains to be seen. If Thompson elects to stay on and the team board agrees, the decision for a Thompson replacement may not come for a while.
