Joe Philbin is returning to the Green Bay Packers’ coaching staff, according to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky.

Although Mike McCarthy is yet to name Philbin’s role, it will likely be similar to his previous offensive coordinator duties in Green Bay, according to Demovsky’s report. I think this is a smart hire by McCarthy.

Of course, bigger questions need to be answered in the near future. Who will become the team’s next general manager? It likely won’t be current Seahawks GM John Schneider. More on that in a moment.

Brian Gutekunst is among the top candidates to land the job, but he could leave for Houston if he isn’t named GM in Green Bay.

Gutekunst is set for an interview with the Texans, according to Josh McClain of the Houston Chronicle.

Sunday’s Packers News Report features articles on Schneider, a look at draft prospect Joshua Jackson and a report of the team’s new wide receivers coach.

Here’s an interesting one. Seattle denied Green Bay permission to interview Schneider, but could Mark Murphy argue that the Packers should be able to talk to him? It’s possible. In Green Bay, Schneider would have full control of the 53-man roster. That’s not the case in Seattle.

Joe D’Aloisio began his draft profile series looking at a potential Green Bay target, Iowa cornerback Joshua Jackson. He spoke with draft analyst Dane Brugler to get some insight on Jackson.

"McCarthy is still restructuring his staff and redefining roles, but Philbin is expected to take on many of the offensive coordinator duties regardless of what his actual title will be. McCarthy will continue calling plays for the offense."
