Should the Green Bay Packers release Clay Matthews?

Clay Matthews III, a first-round draft pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, has been a cornerstone of the Green Bay Packers defense since his arrival nine seasons ago. However, he has not been the same force since his early days in Packers News.

In 2013, Matthews signed a five-year contract extension to remain with the team. Since that time, however, Matthews has not performed on the high level he was once capable of. He made just over $15 Million during the 2017 season.

Given his performance this past season, it may be time to get rid of that hefty contract so the Packers can look to extend contracts of other players, or look to free agency.

Why let him go?

Well, the easy answer is Matthews lack of production. Per Pro Football Reference, Matthews hasn’t recorded double-digit sacks since the 2014 campaign. In addition, the last time he notched 50 or more tackles was in 2014.

It has been three seasons since he recorded an interception and seven seasons since he had a defensive touchdown. His knack for the ball has certainly diminished over the years.

Injuries have slowed down Matthews too. In his nine-year career, he’s missed a total of 17 regular season games. With the majority of those injuries affecting his legs, it will only be a matter of time before he will never be completely healthy.

Why keep him?

Matthews has shown he can be an asset while on the field. On many occasions his presence on the field alone makes everyone around him better. Anytime you watch a game you can see how the energy is increased compared to when Matthews is on the sidelines.

Matthews has also shown he can play almost anywhere on defense too. He had a career resurrection in 2014 when he moved to inside linebacker halfway through the season. His dominant position is outside linebacker, but he has shown he can play elsewhere.

Not only can he play any of the linebacker positions, his skill set and physical attributes scream defensive end. Maybe not a true defensive end, but an “elephant” position could be in the future for Matthews.

There are a variety of uses for him at this stage in his career. If he is willing to negotiate his contract to take a pay cut, there is really no reason for Matthews to leave. The injuries are a downfall, but when he is out on the field, he is playing with everything he has.
