Packers: 5 biggest needs on the roster entering offseason
1. Edge rusher
No area needs more attention than the Packers’ pass rush.
Clay Matthews and Nick Perry form a solid duo, but the position has little depth. The result is a lack of consistency from the Packers’ edge rushers.
Matthews’ contract has raised questions about his future, but the Packers should keep him around. While he’s not the elite sack artist he once was, he’s still a talented player who can make game-changing plays.
If Green Bay enters the 2018 season with Matthews in a complementary role as opposed to the team’s top pass rusher, Mike Pettine will be pleased.
If the Packers turn to free agency, two players of interest could be Detroit’s Ezekiel Ansah and Atlanta’s Adrian Clayborn.
Ansah’s price tag might put off the Packers, but he could give the defense a major boost. The 28-year-old has struggled to stay healthy, but he is coming off a 12-sack season in Detroit.
Clayborn, too, has dealt with a number of injuries throughout his career. But since moving to Atlanta in 2015, he’s missed just three games. He has 17 sacks in three years with the Falcons, 9.5 of which came this season.
