Should the Green Bay Packers have interest in free agent cornerback Vontae Davis?

Vontae Davis has been one of the top cornerbacks in the league since being drafted in the first round by the Miami Dolphins in 2009. Davis has consistently been a threat in the secondary to quarterbacks and receivers. The two-time Pro Bowler only has one direction to go, which is up.

From 2009-2011 Davis spent his career with the Dolphins where in his rookie season he recorded 53 tackles, four interceptions and 11 pass deflections. He was eventually traded to the Colts in 2012 for a second-round draft pick.

In Indianapolis, Davis was at his peak and went to two consecutive Pro Bowls (2014 and 2015) and in 2014 he led the NFL in lowest opponent passer rating (38.8).

In 2015 Davis made his second Pro Bowl by having another great season with four interceptions, 48 tackles,16 passes defended and starting every single game of the season.

If picked up by Green Bay, Packers fans should expect a great combo with Kevin King, Damarious Randall and whoever Green Bay drafts in 2018. Davis might not be the tallest CB, but he brings intense presence to the secondary with his ability to stare down the QB and play man-to-man to the fullest ability.

His biggest issue seems to be injuries. In 2017 Davis was released by the Colts due to him having season-ending surgery in November. But ESPN reported this week that he’s been cleared to return.

With Miami he had hamstring issues, and problems with cramps. While definitely not as bad as some other players in the league or even current Packers, it could be an issue.

If signed by Green Bay, Davis would help improve this struggling secondary, and it would be good to have a cornerback in the secondary who’s been in the league for quite a while. A lack of a veteran presence has been one of the biggest issues with this Packers secondary for quite some time.

Davis and new defensive coordinator Mike Pettine have the potential to be a great combo.
