Quarterbacks

The return to health of Aaron Rodgers will make most problems with this position go away. He was well on his way to another great season prior to the broken right collarbone in Week 6.

With Rodgers’ famous chip on his shoulder, possibly growing after the injury, I don’t expect anything less than another stellar year from the two-time MVP if he can stay healthy all season.

But as we saw this past season, injuries do occur and a capable backup can make all the difference between playing into January or drafting in the top-20.

Brett Hundley had three years of experience going into this season. Many fans during the preseason were trying to find trade partners and a high draft pick before Brett played a meaningful snap with the Packers.

All that hope proved to be false once pressed into action after Rodgers’ injury. Be it McCarthy’s stubbornness or lack of trust, Joe Callahan does not appear to be the answer to the backup QB problem.

Verdict: It’s up to the GM to find a capable backup to Rodgers. While it’s not out of the realm of possibility that Hundley turns the corner, the evidence is not there. Gutekunst has to find a better option. A veteran backup could be a pricey option. Any free agent QB will automatically make more than a draft pick. But a veteran might be the best option for a team with its sights set on the playoffs.
