1. Aaron Rodgers

It’s only a matter of time before Aaron Rodgers becomes the highest-paid player in league history once again. The two-time MVP has just a couple of years remaining on his current deal. The sooner the Packers get the deal done, the better. In all likelihood, Rodgers will have a new contract by the time he takes his first preseason snap in August.

Rodgers’ average salary is currently $22 million, good for just eighth among quarterbacks in the NFL. Alex Smith, Joe Flacco and Jimmy Garoppolo all earn more.

San Francisco recently signed Garoppolo to a five-year, $137.5 million deal, again setting the bar higher.

Spotrac’s market value tool has Rodgers’ average salary at $28.5 million, which would exceed Garoppolo’s $27.5 million. But with the ever-increasing salary cap, the Packers can handle the price tag. But the longer they leave it, the higher this salary will rise.

Extending Rodgers’ contract will likely be one of the top priorities for new general manager Brian Gutekunst this offseason. This is something he’ll be working closely with Russ Ball on, and in all likelihood the Packers have been preparing for this extension for many years.
