Packers: Biggest questions at each position group on the roster
Wide receiver: What’s next for Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb?
We’ve arrived at the million dollar question. What’s next for Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb?
Nelson and Cobb both have a year remaining on their current deals, but their 2018 cap hits could force the Packers to either restructure one of their contracts, or release them. Green Bay might not have to part ways with one of their veteran pass catchers, but it would help free up cap room to potentially sign a free agent at another position.
Green Bay is currently spending $38.38 million on the cap at the wide receiver position, which is a league-high, according to Spotrac. Nelson, Cobb and Davante Adams are among the top-16 for 2018 cap hits at the position. Cobb is in line for a cap hit of $12.72 million, with Nelson just below at $12.52 million — both numbers by Spotrac.
So, what’s next?
One option is that the Packers do nothing and pay both Nelson and Cobb at their current salaries with their contracts expiring next year. Another option is ask one, or both, of them to restructure their deal. The final option is to release either Nelson or Cobb, or both, to free up more cap room.
I’m just glad I’m not the one making the decisions.
