The Green Bay Packers need to add more experience to the secondary.

New general manager Brian Gutekunst has already taken a few steps towards improving the Green Bay Packers‘ defense.

By signing Muhammad Wilkerson and Tramon Williams, the Packers have a pair of experienced players who can help improve the unit at their respective positions. At his best, Wilkerson is a dominant force up front. Williams gives the secondary an immediate upgrade and is a perfect short-term addition.

But there is still work to be done before the draft kicks off in a month’s time.

Green Bay will undoubtedly select a cornerback in the draft, more likely two or three, but relying on rookies to fix the position carries great risk. We can include Kevin King in that group. The second-year corner has just nine games of experience to his name.

Signing Williams was a good move. He proved he can still play last year in Arizona, and his arrival is also good news for the young players on the roster.

But Gutekunst should look to add another experienced defensive back this offseason. That is particularly true now that safety Morgan Burnett is no longer there.

Here comes the good news. Gutekunst agrees.

Green Bay made its move for Bears cornerback Kyle Fuller, signing him to an offer sheet before Chicago matched, and Mike Triplett of ESPN also reported free agent Delvin Breaux has a visit planned with the Packers.

Breaux has been hit with injuries the past two years, playing in just six games since 2015. But assuming he’s fully healthy, Breaux could instantly upgrade the Packers’ cornerback room.

Pair Breaux with Williams and King and suddenly the urgent need in the draft is decreased.

That said, even with the 28-year-old on board I’d be in favor of the Packers being aggressive and trading up for a player like Denzel Ward if he falls to the ninth or 10th overall pick.

The Packers would have the experience in Breaux and Williams, but also the star potential of Ward and King. All of a sudden, Green Bay would have plenty of talent at cornerback.

Regardless of whether they trade up or not next month, the Packers will be looking to add cornerbacks at some stage.

First, they must sign another free agent.
