It’s going to be a big season for Green Bay Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb, who is entering a contract year.

Four years after his last 1,000-yard season and trip to the Pro Bowl, is Randall Cobb ready for a big year with the Green Bay Packers?

Following Jordy Nelson‘s departure, it’s possible head coach Mike McCarthy wants to get the ball to Cobb more frequently.

What can we expect from the 27-year-old in 2018?

2017 stats

Last season, Cobb made 66 receptions for 653 yards and four touchdowns. It was the sixth straight year he had caught at least four touchdown passes. Cobb finished second on the team in receiving yards, second in receptions and third in touchdowns.

2017 review

It was a solid season for Cobb, but he was inconsistent, particularly following Aaron Rodgers‘ injury.

That said, he continued to prove why he’s still an important piece of the Packers’ offense. When Cobb plays well, he’s tough to defend.

Two games stand out when looking back at Cobb’s 2017 season. The first was the Week 1 win over Seattle. That afternoon, Cobb caught nine of his 13 targets for 85 yards.

The second was in Rodgers’ return game at Carolina. Cobb made seven receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown — he found the end zone after an impressive after-the-catch run.

Odds of making roster: 100 percent

It always felt likely the Packers were going to make a tough decision and cut a player with a big cap hit in 2018. GM Brian Gutekunst made the decision to release Jordy Nelson.

That means Cobb will move up to the No. 2 spot behind Davante Adams.

2018 preview

Importantly, Cobb is entering a contract year in 2018. His performances this season will determine whether he is offered a long-term deal by the Packers next offseason.

Cobb will continue to play an important role in the Green Bay Packers offense, but he could now be set for an increase in targets.

That will depend on the depth the Packers have at the position. Training camp will go a long way to deciding that.

Jimmy Graham will receive a big share of the targets, but what about the rookie receivers? How about Geronimo Allison?

Is Allison ready to step up into a bigger role? Could a rookie like J’Mon Moore make an early impact?

The Green Bay Packers offense will look different this year following a number of offseason changes. But one thing is for sure: Randall Cobb will have an important role to play in the slot.

If Cobb has a strong season, there’s a good chance he’ll be a Packer in 2019.
