How the Brett Hundley trade impacts the Green Bay Packers’ 53-man roster decisions.

The Green Bay Packers have made their decision at quarterback.

After trading away Brett Hundley to the Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday, second-year DeShone Kizer will be the backup to Aaron Rodgers this season.

But how does the Hundley trade impact the Packers’ 53-man roster?

Well, perhaps not as much as you might initially think.

Once the trade was announced, it felt like the Packers’ decision wasn’t just that Kizer had won the backup job, but also that they would keep just two quarterbacks instead of three.

That may not be the case after all.

According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN, the Packers plan to keep both Kizer and Tim Boyle on the 53-man roster. Boyle has played well in preseason, and the team might not want to risk losing him.

By keeping three quarterbacks, general manager Brian Gutekunst and head coach Mike McCarthy will have challenging decisions at other positions.

With three quarterbacks, can they afford to keep seven wide receivers? You can certainly make a case for keeping seven.

All three draft picks at the position deserve to make the roster. J’Mon Moore, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Equanimeous St. Brown have been inconsistent this summer, but they have each shown potential for the future.

What about one of the team’s preseason MVPs, Jake Kumerow? Or key special teams player Trevor Davis?

You could easily make a case for four of those players joining Davante Adams, Randall Cobb and Geronimo Allison on the final 53.

But if the Packers keep three quarterbacks and seven wide receivers, they will be limited elsewhere.

Would that mean keeping fewer offensive linemen? It’s an area the Packers need depth.

What about inside linebacker? With rookie Oren Burks currently injured, Green Bay could need an extra linebacker to start the season.

Now that Lenzy Pipkins has been traded away, could they keep just five cornerbacks on the roster? Maybe four safeties?

Even without Hundley, Green Bay looks set to keep three quarterbacks on the roster. It’s an interesting decision, but one that clearly shows the team likes Boyle and doesn’t want to risk losing him like Taysom Hill a year ago.
