Packers: Top five performers in Week 2 tie vs. Vikings
By Jesse Fry
3. Defense vs. the run
The Green Bay Packers defense stepped it up versus the run game of Minnesota. Kenny Clark, Muhammad Wilkerson and Mike Daniels kept the offensive line occupied and allowed Blake Martinez and Antonio Morrison to clean up in the run game.
Dalvin Cook was held to 38 yards on 10 carries, and the Vikings as a team only had 68 yards rushing on the day.
Granted, the Vikings were playing from behind for most of the game, but they were never down enough where they had to abandon the run game. The Packers defense took the lesson learned from last week and applied it, limiting the longest gain on the ground to a nine-yard gain.
The holes in the run game were closed quickly by the Packers defense. Everyone from the front seven to the secondary played a role in limiting the Vikings on the ground.
A whole team effort was needed and that’s what the Packers got. They are showing signs of a better defense. If the team can finish with a top 12 defense this season, Rodgers won’t have to do it all alone. Considering that his injury may take some time to heal, Rodgers will need all the help he can get.
