5. Ty Montgomery, RB

Jamaal Williams has done an admiral job as the lead back in the first two weeks. His stats aren’t all that impressive, 31 carries for 106 yards and 3.4 yards per carry. But his blitz pick up has been superb.

Ty Montgomery has done well with the little chances he has gotten. Montgomery has seven carries for 38 yards and a 5.4 yards per carry average. Neither Montgomery nor Williams has a gain over 20 yards or a touchdown to this point. That needs to change.

Even with Aaron Jones returning from his two-game suspension, I feel Montgomery should be the hand to ride. At least for this week that is.

As of Wednesday, Mike McCarthy stated Jones is behind Williams and Montgomery in the pecking order. While I feel like this will change, it’s the smart move right now. Bring him back slowly, Jones had a hamstring injury in the preseason and we don’t know his conditioning yet. It would be a mistake to rush him back into a full workload just to get hurt.

Montgomery looked like the better runner in the game against the Vikings. Williams ran hard but Montgomery seemed to find the open space better than Williams. I can understand Williams’ blocking ability is a must with an injured Rodgers, but Montgomery was no slouch against Minnesota.

I expect a good balance between the two running backs with Jones getting worked in. But Montgomery should be the one to get more touches this game. In time, Jones is the back to play, but for now, give Montgomery a chance.
