Packers: Three takeaways from Week 5 loss to Lions
3. Packers unable to find balance on offense
Entering the game up against the league’s No. 32 run defense, the Packers will be disappointed they only ran the ball 20 times.
Of course, being down by 24 points is a big reason for that. But it’s another game the team was unable to find balance between the run and pass.
Aaron Jones looked great for a third straight week, but he had just seven carries in the game, which he turned into 40 yards at a 5.7-yard-per-carry average. Jamaal Williams was also efficient, turning six carries into 33 yards at 5.5 yards per carry.
Without sounding like a broken record, the Packers need to get the ball in Jones’ hands more often.
Yes, Williams is a good player and ran well on Sunday. Ty Montgomery brings much-needed versatility.
But Jones can be a difference maker on offense for this team. Every week he proves it.
Seven carries isn’t enough for the team’s top running back. He needs to be given a featured role, with Williams taking on a secondary role and Montgomery being used for his pass-catching ability.
Part of the problem is that the Packers continue to start slow, fall behind and are then forced to throw the football more often.
This offense can be one of the league’s best if it finds balance. That wasn’t the case against the Lions.
