5. Trevor Davis

Trevor Davis didn’t do anything spectacular on Thursday night, but him being healthy keeps other more prominent players out of harm’s way.

With many players dropping out with injuries, the Packers cannot afford another starter returning kicks.

Tramon Williams, Randall Cobb, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Bashaud Breeland have all taken turns returning kicks. All are, have, or will be featured players for the Packers. To have Davis back there instead of them will ensure the Packers won’t have to make another replacement due to an injury on a kick return.

Davis’ night was not bad though. He did average 10 yards per return on punts and had a 50-plus yard return that was called back because of holding.

Davis has the speed the other returners, besides MVS, don’t have. His decision-making has been spotty at best and a year of maturity will hopefully have rid Davis of that problem.

It was clear on Davis’ punt returns what the Packers have been missing and why they decided to use an injured reserve designation on him. Davis is fast and elusive in the open field. It doesn’t take him long to get to top speed and he is the best option the Packers have in the return game.

A question moving forward might be if and how the Packers plan to use Davis on offense. MVS and Equanimeous St. Brown have played well, but Davis has two years of experience over the other two and might be trusted more.

We have not seen Davis make an appearance on offense yet, but with only half a week of practice since returning, the Packers may not have wanted to put him in there yet.

The Packers now face a must-win in Minnesota this Sunday night.

The Packers have to put their previous road woes behind them and figure out a way to win one. They have had their chances and just have not been able to put teams away in the fourth quarter. Maybe a road win at the hated Vikings can be that “galvanizing moment” Rodgers is looking for.
