Packers: Three veterans who are safe after the draft
By Jesse Fry
DeShone Kizer
There was a lot of speculation leading into the draft that the Packers could use one of their first-round picks on an eventual successor to Aaron Rodgers and replacement for DeShone Kizer. The Packers passed at the position and are leaving the battle to those already on the roster.
The team did add an undrafted rookie quarterback, but as far as legitimate threats go, the only one seems to be Tim Boyle.
The good news for Kizer is he may already have a leg up on the competition. Kizer and new coach Matt LaFleur already spent a year together when both were at Notre Dame. I’m certain a lot has changed since then but the familiarity with each other can only help.
Kizer didn’t give fans a lot to be excited about last year, or the season prior for that matter. But, Gutekunst gave up on a former first-round pick to acquire Kizer, so you would have to assume he’s going to give him every chance to win the spot.
Boyle and Kizer are two completely different quarterbacks. Boyle is more of a stand-in-the-pocket player while Kizer is mobile and seems to fit the profile of the Kyle Shanahan/Sean McVay system.
Former coach Mike McCarthy wasn’t able to get the best out of Kizer, but maybe LaFleur will. The hope is Kizer won’t see the field unless in the preseason or in mop up duty, but with no draft pick or free agent added to the mix, it would seem his spot is secure.
As I stated before, no roster spot is safe in the NFL. But for now, it seems these players and their positions on the team are secure.
