5. Elgton Jenkins

After throwing two first-round picks onto an already promising defense, the Packers shifted gears in the second round and drafted Elgton Jenkins out of Mississippi State. While not a gifted athlete, Jenkins was as good an offensive lineman as anyone in the country for the Bulldogs. Lane Taylor did not have a good year in 2018, and he will be a free agent following this coming season.

Once the Packers inked a deal with Billy Turner in free agency, Bryan Bulaga‘s long-term standing with the team was all but sealed up. The Packers will not be re-signing him after this season, and drafting Jenkins will allow them to kick Turner out to tackle where he best fits.

If they decide to let Taylor out the door, then Jenkins can also step in and play left guard. Jenkins has struggled some in training camp, but some real game action will be a better way to tell if he is as advertised. Depth on the offensive line has been a problem in Green Bay for ages, and the return of Cole Madison isn’t changing that.

Jenkins will get lots of playing time throughout these four games. Corey Linsley likely won’t play more than a couple series here and there, so he will also see some time at center. Earlier this week, the Packers also cut second-round implosion Jason Spriggs after three nausea-inducing seasons. The Packers needed to add to their offensive line, and the additions of Turner and Jenkins could be crucial down the stretch of the season.
