Packers: Five things they need to fix in the bye week
Third-down offense
Overall, there’s a lot to like about the Packers offense so far this season. Aaron Rodgers has been at his MVP best for most of the year. Aaron Jones has 14 total touchdowns. Jamaal Williams has been the perfect complement to Jones with 457 all-purpose yards and six touchdowns.
One area the Packers will look to improve is on third down. Surprisingly, even when the offense has been moving the ball, they haven’t been consistent enough on third downs. This season, the Packers have converted just 37.17 percent of their third-down attempts. For the offense to stay on the field and sustain longer drives, they’ll need to move the chains on third down.
Penalties haven’t helped, but we’ll focus on that in some more detail shortly. According to Team Rankings, Green Bay’s third-down conversion percentage this year is only slightly better than last season when the offense converted on 36.76 percent.
Clearly, Matt LaFleur and the offense are getting a lot right. The Packers are averaging 25 points per game and have established a nice balance between the run and the pass. But to take that next step as the season goes on, the Packers will need to improve their efficiency on third downs, especially on third-and-short.
