Round 2 (62): Cole Kmet, TE, Notre Dame

I was surprised to see Cole Kmet still available with the Packers’ second pick, with many draft analysts believing he could be a first-round pick. But with Kmet still there, it would be too difficult to pass up the opportunity to add another receiving option to the offense.

The Packers’ tight end position is in a state of flux. Will the Packers move on from Jimmy Graham? Will they bring back either Marcedes Lewis or Robert Tonyan? What role will Jace Sternberger have in 2020? With so many questions yet to be answered, it’s difficult to know just how big of a need tight end could be when the draft arrives.

There seems to be a good chance the Packers won’t bring them all back, opening the door for a rookie to join Sternberger. Bringing back Lewis for his blocking ability would also make sense.

While Kmet’s blocking might need some work at the next level, he’d give the Packers another big target in the middle of the field.

Kmet is arguably the best tight end in the class and, with some time to develop, could become a long-term starter in Green Bay’s offense. In 2020, he’d give Aaron Rodgers more receiving help. In the second round, this would be great value.
