Day 4: Defensive backs

Cornerbacks

The Packers had one of the best cornerback groups they’ve had in a long time last season. Jaire Alexander is a rising star and Kevin King has shown he is a quality starting cornerback when he can stay healthy. While they have a good group of cornerbacks, Tramon Williams, as good as he was last year, will be 37 next month and is a free agent, and you can never have enough cornerbacks in this pass-happy league.

Lamar Jackson – Nebraska

A big cornerback who earned second-team All-Big Ten honors after his breakout senior season. He is more of a zone corner who lacks speed, but his long arms can disrupt receivers. His size could also help with pressing at the line but could struggle to stay with fast receivers on deep routes.

Lavert Hill – Michigan

At 5-foot-11 and 182 pounds, Hill is undersized at cornerback. He won’t be too effective lining up on outside receivers but could be used similarly to Tramon Williams, covering slot receivers on the inside. He has a good football IQ but his physical makeup will be tough in the NFL, making him less effective in run support as well.

Bryce Hall – Virginia

Hall is a natural outside corner. He has long arms that help him challenge passes. Decent man coverage with help over the top. Hall is the type of corner who could eventually transition into safety at some point.

Safeties

Drafting a safety worked out pretty well for the Packers last year. Darnell Savage played well for a rookie and I can only imagine he will take a big step next year. Adrian Amos was steady, but beyond those two, there weren’t big playmakers. Raven Greene and Ibraheim Campbell both missed a good chunk of the season with injuries.

Antonio Winfield Jr. – Minnesota

Winfield is the son of former Minnesota Viking Antoine Winfield. He was a first-team Associated Press All-American and first-team All-Big Ten selection with 88 tackles, 3.5 for loss, three sacks, and seven interceptions. He isn’t the biggest guy on the field, but he can play. I’d love to have Winfield in Mike Pettine’s defense.

K’Von Wallace – Clemson

Wallace is a thumper. He played safety and big nickel for Clemson but truly excelled as a blitzer. He is essentially a mini-inside linebacker. His coverage skills need some work, but he could be a menace on the field with his tackling. The Packers secondary could use a little attitude like Wallace’s.

Next. Packers three-round mock draft. dark

Julian Blackmon – Utah

Big safety who would likely fill the big nickel position in Pettine’s defense. He can help in run support but can also match up with tight ends in coverage. He suffered a knee injury in the PAC-12 title game, which could cause him to fall in the draft. If the Packers have a chance to take him in the later rounds, he could be a solid pickup.
