Packers request back-to-back road games starting in September

The Green Bay Packers could face a couple of tests on the road early in the 2020 season.

The Packers won’t know their full regular season schedule until around mid-April, but they are hoping for a couple of road games early in the year.

According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN, the Packers made a request to have two road games, which would be in consecutive weeks, starting in late September.

The first is due to the 2020 Ryder Cup, which will be held from Friday, Sept. 25 to Sunday, Sept. 27. The event takes place at Whistling Straits Golf Course in Wisconsin. This falls on Week 3 of the regular season.

A week later, on Saturday, Oct. 3, Wisconsin will host Notre Dame at Lambeau Field. The Packers have requested to avoid being scheduled to play a game at Lambeau the following day.

It remains to be seen whether these two requests will be granted. Putting together a 17-week schedule involving 32 teams isn’t an easy task. But if they do, the Packers would likely have back-to-back road games in Weeks 3 and 4.

If they don’t begin the season with consecutive home games, they could face three of their opening four games away from Lambeau Field. Not easy.

Another option would be to give the Packers a bye in Week 4, which is the earliest week teams can have off. That way, there would be no clash with the Wisconsin game.

Green Bay’s 2020 road schedule is a challenging one, so playing away from Lambeau often early in the season will make it difficult for Matt LaFleur’s team. Despite having a strong record on the road last season, they face matchups with the San Francisco 49ers, Houston Texans and New Orleans Saints in the upcoming season.

But to look at it on a positive note, the more road games they play early in the season, the more games are saved for Lambeau Field in frozen conditions later on.
