Jake Kumerow

The Packers have a big need at receiver. Last season, we knew what they had in Davante Adams and that was about it. I was hopeful that Marquez Valdes-Scantling would turn into a deep threat that could take the top off the defense but other than those two, the receiver position was a big question mark. I hoped both Jake Kumerow would step up and fill in the gaps, but that didn’t really pan out.

Kumerow, the hometown hero, has gained a bit of a cult following. Packers fans love him because he is a feel-good story from UW-Whitewater. He showed flashes of potential in both preseasons in Green Bay, but never really seemed to capitalize on it. He was injured most of his first year there, but last year he was relatively healthy and still struggled to get onto the field even without a clear number two or three receiver for most of the year.

He finished the season with just 12 catches for 219 yards and a touchdown. Not the production the Packers were probably hoping for. He is also entering this next season at 28 years old. Not that he’s “old,” but I think the Packers would be more willing to keep him on if he were a few years younger. With this year’s draft class being loaded at receiver, I could see Brian Gutekunst drafting a couple to try to inject some talent and youth into the Packers’ receiving corps.

As an exclusive rights free agent, I can see the Packers taking a pass on Kumerow.
