Blake Martinez

The Packers seemingly have interest in signing just about every free agent inside linebacker, perhaps suggesting they’re planning to move on from Blake Martinez. The most interesting report came from Bill Huber of Sports Illustrated, who wrote that Cory Littleton is the Packers’ top priority at linebacker.

Add in the fact that the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Martinez wants “at least $10 million a year”, and one has to assume the Packers will have a new starting linebacker when the 2020 season gets underway.

Is it possible Martinez won’t get the contract he wants elsewhere and would be willing to accept a lower offer from the Packers? Yes, but that would seem unlikely. Martinez is a solid player and makes a ton of tackles. He should draw interest from around the league.

At the right price, you can make a case for re-signing Martinez. But bringing him back would likely require overpaying, a move Brian Gutekunst absolutely shouldn’t do.

If Martinez departs, the Packers will need to find a new starter at inside linebacker. Unless Oren Burks, Curtis Bolton or Ty Summers can become that player in 2020, they’d need to find Martinez’s replacement this spring.

Based on how the offseason has gone so far, it seems unlikely Martinez will be back.

Prediction: Walks
