Packers: Three players to avoid signing in free agency
1. Emmanuel Sanders
Emmanuel Sanders is one of the best receivers set to hit the market, but there are a few reasons why the Packers shouldn’t make an offer.
Once again, price would be a concern. Spotrac’s market value estimate for Sanders is $10 million a year. Considering how deep the draft class is at wide receiver, the Packers would be better off using their limited cap room to address other areas of need in free agency before looking for receiver help in the draft.
Sanders is clearly still a talented player and he had a good 2019 season with both the Denver Broncos and San Francisco 49ers. However, he turns 33 next week. It’s tough to justify paying $10 million a year to a receiver the wrong side of 30, especially given the depth at the position in the draft.
Make no mistake, Sanders would be a good addition to the offense. His experience would also be valuable for a team aiming to return to the Super Bowl next season.
The Packers should use free agency to address positions of need on defense, and it’s possible they could also sign a tight end. Signing a wide receiver could help the offense but the price has to be right. Sanders’ market value could be too high for the Packers.
