Packers: Three ways they can win the 2020 NFL Draft
3. Don’t forget about cornerback
I’m sure many Packers fans are fed up with the team drafting cornerbacks. From Damarious Randall to Quinten Rollins to Josh Jackson, many early-round picks haven’t gone to plan in recent years. But while the focus has rightly been on fixing the run defense and surrounding Aaron Rodgers with more talent, they shouldn’t forget about cornerback.
Jaire Alexander is a rising star and has been the Packers’ best cornerback the past two seasons. When healthy, Kevin King has formed a solid partnership with Alexander as Green Bay’s two starters on the outside. But the first problem is that King is a free agent at the end of the season.
The second problem is with depth. Outside of Alexander and King, here’s a list of the cornerbacks under contract for 2020: Chandon Sullivan, Josh Jackson, DaShaun Amos, Kabion Ento, Ka’dar Hollman.
Sullivan put together a good 2019 season but Jackson has struggled. It’s unknown what impact the other three players can make yet.
Re-signing Tramon Williams would help fix the problem but the Packers would still be smart to have an eye on 2021 and beyond. Cornerback is a position of need that isn’t getting talked about often enough.
While the Packers need to get better at other positions, they shouldn’t forget about cornerback.
