Henry Ruggs III in the first round

We all know about the depth of this incredible wide receiver class, which is especially important given the Packers’ desperate need at the position. While they could decide to wait until No. 30 overall and choose from the remaining receivers, or even wait longer until the second or third round, what if Gutekunst decides to target one of the best in the class?

Henry Ruggs III comes to mind.

If you had to describe the type of receiver the Packers would love to find in the draft, Ruggs would tick just about every box. He has lightning speed, which is something this offense lacks. Ruggs proved that at the combine with a 4.27 40-yard time, fastest of any player at any position this year.

He can line up all over the field and has star potential. In a deep receiver class, Ruggs stands out as one of the top three. He averaged 18.6 yards per reception in his final season at Alabama. He also caught 24 touchdowns over the past three seasons.

Trading up for Ruggs could cost a lot. There’s a chance he could be selected in the top-15 which would make it difficult. But if he makes it as far as No. 20 overall, the Packers should at least consider picking up the phone. Bucky Brooks of NFL.com has Ruggs going at No. 21 to the Philadelphia Eagles in his latest mock.

If Ruggs is still on the board around that range and the Packers can make a deal to move up, it could be a home-run decision by Brian Gutekunst. A combination of Ruggs and Davante Adams catching passes from Aaron Rodgers could be close to unstoppable.
