By signing Christian Kirksey, the Packers made a low-risk move that could pay off. Kirksey is a talented player and a starter, but Green Bay has to hope he can stay healthy. Kirksey played in all 16 games in each of his first four seasons in the league but has since only played nine games in two years.

Kirksey could still be a great signing if he avoids injury and gets back to his best, but should the Packers have made a move for the best inside linebacker available?

Cory Littleton signed a three-year deal worth $35.25 million with the Las Vegas Raiders. According to Spotrac, his cap hit is $11.75 million in each season. While that’s much larger than Kirksey’s deal, he would’ve fixed the need at inside linebacker. And the contract would’ve been manageable for the Packers.

With 22 pass defenses, five interceptions and 7.5 sacks over the past two seasons, Littleton could’ve been an impact player in Green Bay’s defense and a significant upgrade over Blake Martinez.

After signing Littleton, any moves the Packers made at inside linebacker in the draft could’ve been on Day 3 for depth. Now, they may still need to use an early-round pick at the position despite signing Kirksey.
