Packers: Three reasons to be excited about the 2020 season
2. The run game will be improved
It’s no secret the Packers wanted to strengthen the ground game this offseason. While that may come as a surprise following Aaron Jones’ breakout 2019 campaign, there’s good reason for this. Depth is one factor. Behind Jones and Jamaal Williams, the Packers didn’t have enough depth in 2019. That allows Matt LaFleur to rotate his backs more and keep them fresh.
A lot of pressure was put on Jones to deliver last season, which he almost always did, but the Packers wanted to get him some help. That’s especially important if the Packers want to achieve even more balance on offense in 2020. They did a relatively good job of that last season, passing 59.81 percent of the time, according to Team Rankings.
AJ Dillon’s power and ability to break tackles will make him a welcome addition to the Packers offense. With four of their final six games at Lambeau Field late in the season, having a running back like Dillon who can wear down defenses could be huge for this offense.
Re-signing Marcedes Lewis and drafting tight end Josiah Deguara also shows a commitment to improving the ground game as both players will be asked to run block. Deguara could play an H-back role.
Rodgers is still a highly-efficient quarterback and gives the Packers their best chance to win games. But like other teams, such as the New Orleans Saints, have shown, helping your MVP quarterback with a strong run game is a smart idea.
The Packers were good on the ground in 2019. This year they can be great.
