3 reasons why Packers should sign Everson Griffen
1. Packers pass rush could be one of NFL’s best
Great defenses have a number of talented pass rushers, ensuring there is consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks no matter which players are on the field.
The Packers already have one of the NFL’s best defensive tackle-edge rusher combinations with Kenny Clark, Preston Smith, and Za’Darius Smith. Together, they were unstoppable in 2019, combining for 31.5 sacks.
Now add in Griffen, who made eight sacks for the Vikings last year. He would be replacing Kyler Fackrell, who signed with the New York Giants in free agency.
If the Packers also got a second-year jump from Rashan Gary, they’d have four excellent pass rushers. And that would give Mike Pettine great flexibility. He could move any combination of Za’Darius Smith, Griffen, or Gary inside with Clark, with the others rushing off the edge. On obvious passing downs, Pettine could get three or four pass rushers on the field at the same time.
Opposing offensive lines would have a huge challenge trying to slow down the Packers’ pass rush featuring all four players.
It remains to be seen how realistic it is that the Packers sign Griffen. But if Gutekunst can make a deal, Griffen would be a great addition to the defense. He could help take Green Bay’s defense to the next level.
