The Smith Bros. may be heading towards a split before the Packers’ 2021 season begins

Player #2: Preston Smith

Preston Smith has been a popular name when talking about cap casualties for 2021. Smith is still under contract for two more seasons however, the Packers do have an out they can take advantage of this offseason.

What makes moving on from Smith appealing, besides saving money, is the development of Rashan Gary. Gary had a very solid season and was especially playing well down the stretch. Smith was getting more snaps than Gary and was underperforming for most of the season.

It will be interesting to see if the Packers really do move on from Preston Smith. After all, he is only one season removed from the best year of his career, and Green Bay could want to keep him to provide pass-rush depth.

I wouldn’t be too against Smith hanging around but only if Gary was the other starter on the EDGE. Then you can also make the argument that paying Smith to be a backup isn’t a good use of resources.

I was a fan of the Preston Smith signing and I think a lot of Packers fans will have good memories of the 2019 season but it’s time for Rashan Gary to finally get some extended playing time.
