What if Rodgers stays, and what will it take?

Without a doubt, this is the preferred option. Even for Rodgers, the likelihood is that staying with the Packers gives him the best opportunity to win another championship.

The question is what will it take for this situation to be resolved and for Rodgers to return?

Is it money? Is it the length of the contract? Both? None of that? Unless we spoke to Rodgers personally, it’s impossible to say without guessing.

Charles Robinson of Yahoo reported that the “fracture points between Rodgers and Gutekunst largely revolve around the drafting of Jordan Love”, and also the fact Rodgers wasn’t aware of the possibility of the move beforehand. Gutekunst said on Saturday that communication with Rodgers could’ve been better.

If Rodgers wants long-term commitment from the front office, then perhaps a new contract with a no-trade clause would be a start. That would give him the commitment from the team that he’s the starter for many years to come and they wouldn’t be able to trade him away. A new contract with more money could also be structured to make it almost impossible to release him in the coming seasons, not that the Packers would likely ever consider that.

Maybe that’s what it will take for Rodgers to return, but who knows?

If Rodgers signs an extension and the Packers make this commitment to keeping him long term, it surely means Love won’t be the successor. Love’s contract expires after three more years although the team can exercise a fifth-year option to add a year. So in four years time, they’d have to make a decision. Is Love the man to replace Rodgers?

But that would also mean Love has to go five years without playing much football. It’s not ideal for the Packers and not good for Love whatsoever.

If the team decides to go all-in with Rodgers and the reigning MVP opts to return with a new deal, Love’s future then becomes uncertain. Perhaps the only option then would be to trade Love to a team in need of a quarterback.
