Will the NFC North be more competitive in 2021 after the Green Bay Packers dominated last season?

Let’s check in on the latest NFC North power rankings following last week’s draft.

The headlines are dominated by Aaron Rodgers and his future with the Packers but, right now, he’s still QB1 in Green Bay. Until that changes, we have to assume he’ll be starting in ’21.

1. Green Bay Packers

Previous ranking: 1

With one of the league’s most talented rosters — and that includes Rodgers — the Packers are still way ahead in the NFC North.

They addressed multiple needs in the draft. Eric Stokes could soon be a starter at cornerback, Josh Myers should play from Day 1 at center, and Amari Rodgers can help on both offense and special teams early on.

They also strengthened depth along the offensive line and at running back, and Shemar Jean-Charles is a player to watch.

Winners of the NFC North two years in a row, the Packers remain the team to beat.

2. Chicago Bears

Previous ranking: 2

To Ryan Pace’s credit, he’s done a good job of building the Bears’ roster at just about every position except quarterback. He’s made a mess there with Mike Glennon, Mitch Trubisky, Nick Foles, and Andy Dalton all on the roster in recent years.

But the Bears have put together a strong draft class on paper and may finally have their long-term answer at QB with Justin Fields.

Chicago smartly strengthened the offensive line in the next round by trading up for Teven Jenkins, and then added Larry Borom in the fifth round.

They still have a lot of ground to make up at the top of the NFC North, but the Bears have taken a step forward.

3. Minnesota Vikings

Previous ranking: 3

One of the league’s biggest disappointments last year, the Vikings are looking to bounce back in 2021. Under Mike Zimmer, they’ve never made the postseason two years in a row but have returned to the playoffs each year after missing out.

The Vikings got some much-needed help to their offensive line by drafting Christian Darrisaw but questions remain at quarterback. Will third-round pick Kellen Mond be called on at any point in the season?

4. Detroit Lions

Previous ranking: 4

It’s full rebuild mode for the Lions who traded away Matthew Stafford in the offseason. They will be expected to finish last in the division and land another top draft pick in 2022. But that’s what this team needs to build.

Will they regret passing up on a QB? Justin Fields landed with a division rival not long after their first-round pick. That’s the big question from Detroit’s draft class, but it otherwise looks to be a good one with the focus on the offensive and defensive lines. Tackle Penei Sewell will be a star.
