3. Trade Adams before 2021 season

Another unlikely scenario, and one that would hurt the Packers a lot this season, but unfortunately one that is worth discussing.

If the Packers think a long-term contract is no longer an option and accept they will be losing Adams in free agency next spring, an option would be to trade him in 2021 and try to bring back as much value as possible.

By trading him to another contending team like the Kansas City Chiefs, they could potentially bring back a couple of draft picks and focus on the bigger picture. They’d likely get a third-round compensatory pick for 2023 if Adams signs elsewhere in free agency, but a trade might bring back multiple picks for 2022.

The other advantage is the cap savings. The Packers would create $13.19 million in cap space by trading Adams this year, according to Over The Cap.

That said, with Adams only having a year left on his deal, it’s unlikely the Packers would get back enough in a trade for the best wide receiver in the NFL. The trading team would likely also need to work out a new contract with Adams before agreeing to the deal.

It would hurt the Packers’ Super Bowl chances big time this year as Adams is one of their best players. And it sure wouldn’t help make Rodgers happy in Green Bay.

Likely? No. But it has to be discussed as a possibility.
