What if Aaron Rodgers retires?

This would be a worst-case scenario for the Packers. While a Rodgers retirement would still open up $20 million in cap space, they wouldn’t receive any picks or players in return to aid their rebuild. Essentially, the Packers would lose the MVP for nothing.

This scenario feels like the least likely of the three scenarios. Rodgers is just 38 years old, and is playing some of the best football of his life. Retiring now would rob him of the chances to expand upon his Hall-of-Fame legacy. Additionally, Rodgers has previously said that he wants to play into his 40s. If he retires now, it will be because he wants to end his career in Green Bay, and doesn’t want to play for another franchise.

This scenario would put the Packers into a similar situation as the trade scenario, only with a much more difficult road ahead of them. The lack of draft picks puts them into a position for a much longer rebuild with very little room for error.

However, similarly to the trade scenario, the success of the rebuild would largely depend upon whether or not Jordan Love can develop into a star NFL quarterback. If he does, losing Rodgers will be a much easier blow for the Packers, even if Davante Adams leaves alongside him.
