Packers 2022 draft pick confirmed after early playoff exit
The Packers will pick 28th in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
Things move quickly in the world of the NFL. The Green Bay Packers suffered a heartbreaking playoff exit to the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday night, but very soon their attention will shift to the offseason.
And that includes the 2022 NFL Draft.
The draft is three months away, and we now know that the Packers will be picking 28th in the first round. They were the highest-ranked team to lose in the divisional round, meaning they take the worst pick out of the Tennessee Titans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Buffalo Bills.
At this stage, it’s hard to even name a couple of offseason needs as we don’t know whether key players like Aaron Rodgers, Davante Adams, De’Vondre Campbell, Za’Darius Smith, and Preston Smith will still be on the roster in 2022.
We’ll learn a lot about the direction the Packers are going in before the draft. What will Rodgers’ decision be? How many key free agents will be re-signed and who will walk? By the time the Packers hit the clock in the first round, we’ll have an idea whether they are all in for 2022 or beginning a rebuild.
Who has been picked at No. 28 in past five drafts?
- 2021: New Orleans Saints – Payton Turner, DE, Houston
- 2020: Baltimore Ravens – Patrick Queen, LB, LSU
- 2019: Los Angeles Chargers – Jerry Tillery, DT, Notre Dame
- 2018: Pittsburgh Steelers – Terrell Edmunds, S, Virginia Tech
- 2017: Dallas Cowboys – Taco Charlton, DE, Michigan
The Packers could have a significantly higher pick should they trade Aaron Rodgers in the coming months. The Denver Broncos, for example, own the ninth overall pick. A trade to Denver could be interesting for both teams.
We’ll see. A fascinating offseason awaits for the Packers. We’ll know a lot more by the time the draft rolls around.
