Position-by-position breakdown of Packers’ roster before free agency
Running back
Under contract in 2022: Aaron Jones, AJ Dillon, Kylin Hill, Patrick Taylor
Offseason need: No
The running back combination of Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon will be back in 2022. Any questions over Jones’ future will come after the 2022 season, not before. Assuming Kylin Hill makes a full recovery from injury in time for Week 1, the Packers are in good shape at running back. Maybe they’ll add some depth in the later rounds of the draft, but it’s not a top priority.
Wide receiver
Under contract in 2022: Randall Cobb, Amari Rodgers, Juwann Winfree, Chris Blair
Offseason need: Yes
Wow. Davante Adams, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Allen Lazard, and Equanimeous St. Brown are all free agents. Randall Cobb’s cap hit is $9.5 million. Even if Aaron Rodgers returns, the Packers may have to release Cobb to create cap space. Realistically, Amari Rodgers, Juwann Winfree, and Chris Blair are the only receivers under contract for 2022 who will be there at training camp.
We can expect the Packers to re-sign at least one of their free-agent receivers, but bringing them all back is impossible. Restocking the position in the draft is a must.
Tight end
Under contract in 2022: Marcedes Lewis, Josiah Deguara, Tyler Davis
Offseason need: Yes
Again, Aaron Rodgers’ future could have an impact here. If he returns, he’ll likely want ‘Big Dog’ Marcedes Lewis to be there with him. If not, the Packers may decide to move on from the veteran tight end and make a saving on the salary cap.
Robert Tonyan is a free agent and is also recovering from a torn ACL. His future is uncertain. At this point, Josiah Deguara hasn’t shown enough to be trusted in a full-time role.
If Tonyan isn’t back, tight end is an offseason need for the Packers.
