3. Packers can go all-in for 2022

If Rodgers returns to Green Bay, he needs the team to be fully committed to winning now. That means not drafting his potential replacement in the first round, but doing everything possible to build a Super Bowl contender for 2022.

And it seems they are up for the challenge. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Green Bay is “prepared to go all in for Aaron Rodgers in 2022”. That means pushing as much money into future years as they can.

It’s no secret the Packers are in a tough salary cap situation. But if they work on a new deal with Rodgers, his 2022 cap number can be significantly reduced. The same is true if they work out contract extensions with Preston Smith, Adrian Amos, and Jaire Alexander.

Restructuring deals will be required, but that’s a great way to create cap space for 2022 and push money into future years. Yes, the Packers will likely also need to release a couple of players to free up more cap space, but if they want to, they can maintain a strong roster in the short term.

If the Packers truly go “all in”, they can make this work. It would mean potentially sacrificing the future, so it’s a risky approach to take. But the potential reward is huge. Just ask the Los Angeles Rams.
