Packers free agency predictions 2022: Who re-signs, who is gone?
Robert Tonyan: Walks
Due to his injury, it’s possible Robert Tonyan won’t sign with a team in the first week of free agency. In theory, that could help the Packers bring back their starting tight end. However, Spotrac estimates that Tonyan could make over $10 million per year, and that could be tough for the Packers to match.
According to Bill Huber of Sports Illustrated, Tonyan could return from injury in time for the start of the regular season.
That would be great news for Green Bay if he’s back, but it could also give other teams the confidence to sign him to a big deal.
Tonyan didn’t make a fast start to the season before tearing his ACL, so perhaps teams will be concerned that he has only put up strong numbers in one season. However, he proved that year what he can add to an offense as a pass catcher. Tonyan has safe hands and is excellent in the red zone.
If there are other teams willing to pay Tonyan close to the number Spotrac projects, forget about it. With their cap situation and other priorities, the Packers may have to look for alternatives at the tight end position. My prediction is that Tonyan signs elsewhere.
