Round 3 (92): Phidarian Mathis, DL, Alabama

Doubling down at defensive tackle certainly wasn’t a plan entering the mock draft, but when looking at the best remaining players available on the board in the third round, it was impossible not to pick Alabama’s Phidarian Mathis.

Mathis would fit well as a 3-technique in the Packers’ defense, although one of his biggest strengths is his versatility. Joe Barry would be able to use Mathis in a number of different ways.

Like Travis Jones, Mathis is a strong run defender but he also offers plenty as a pass rusher. In his final season at Alabama, Mathis made nine sacks and had 10.5 tackles for loss.

It’s never a bad thing to add talent to either the defensive or offensive lines. The way the board fell in the third round, picking Mathis was an easy choice. Green Bay’s defensive line would be transformed in one offseason.

The Packers would have surrounded Kenny Clark with a lot of young talent. And not only would they be bringing in talented players, but Green Bay would now have incredible depth across the front three, allowing for Barry to rotate his linemen and keep them fresh.

With Boye Mafe, Travis Jones, and Phidarian Mathis added to an already-strong Packers defense, the sky would be the limit in 2022 and beyond.
